Google Business Profile WhatsApp Button: We Checked 17 Arab Business Panels and Found None (What to Do Anyway)

Google is testing a WhatsApp button in local results, but we found it on none of 17 Arab business panels. On 12 October 2026 we searched 17 branded names across five countries and read each panel signed out. Sixteen showed a business panel, and none carried a WhatsApp button. Owners should still audit the number Google holds for them.
Search Engine Roundtable reported the button on 7 October 2026 and named no countries. In an earlier June report, Google had added WhatsApp numbers to profiles automatically, some of them landlines. WhatsApp is the default contact channel in Arab markets, so a wrong number there costs real enquiries.
What did Google change in local results?
Search Engine Roundtable reported on 7 October 2026 that a WhatsApp button now appears in the local panel. It can replace the chat button or sit beside the call, directions, website and share buttons. The report names no countries and carries no Google statement, though its author said he could reproduce it.
Two earlier facts explain where the numbers come from. Google has let verified owners add a WhatsApp chat option to a profile since the feature launched outside the US, and its February 2025 post listed worldwide availability except the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and China (Search Engine Roundtable, January 2025). Then in June 2026 numbers started appearing without owners adding them.
The June report is the part Arab owners should read twice. Numbers were added automatically over about a week, they matched each business’s main phone number, and in one example the number was a landline that cannot receive WhatsApp. At first owners could not delete them, and a Google product expert on a help forum called it a bug. A later post said owners could delete the number and save (Search Engine Roundtable, 11 June 2026). Google’s own help page says nothing about Google-added numbers.
What did we find in 17 Arab business panels?
We found no WhatsApp button in any of the 16 panels that appeared. We searched 17 well-known business names signed out on 12 October 2026, from a desktop browser in Cairo with the country set through Google’s gl parameter. One search, a Dubai property developer’s sales gallery, returned no panel at all.
| Country | Searches | Sectors | Panel shown | WhatsApp button |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | 4 | 2 hospitals, 2 restaurant chains | 4 of 4 | 0 |
| UAE | 6 | 3 hospitals or clinics, 2 restaurants, 1 property developer | 5 of 6 | 0 |
| Egypt | 3 | Imaging centre, hospital, property developer | 3 of 3 | 0 |
| Qatar | 2 | Hospital, specialist hospital | 2 of 2 | 0 |
| Jordan | 2 | Two hospitals | 2 of 2 | 0 |
Where we read the button labels, the panels showed Website and Directions. One result is worth flagging: a Cairo imaging centre’s search returned an AI Overview that quoted the centre’s WhatsApp number as text. That is a number in an answer, not the button, and it shows Google already surfaces WhatsApp contacts in other places.
This is a small sample of large brands, 11 of them hospitals and clinics, 4 restaurants and 2 property developers. It contains no salons and no small businesses, which are the profiles most likely to have set up chat. We did not sign in, test mobile, or test Maps place pages beyond one search. Treat it as a dated snapshot that says the button is not universal, not that it does not exist.
Why would an Arab business not see the button yet?
Nobody outside Google can say. Google’s help page says chat options are available for select regions and may not appear for every profile. The 7 October report names no countries, so a staged rollout, a test group, or a requirement that the profile has a chat number set are all consistent with what we saw.
Our result narrows one question. If the button were live for every verified profile with a number in these five countries, large brands would show it, and the 16 panels we read did not. That points to a test or a profile-level condition, so do not plan campaigns around the button yet. Plan around the number, because that is the part you control today and the part that already shows in other places.
How do you check and control the WhatsApp number on your profile?
Open your verified profile, choose Edit profile, then Contact, and look at the Chat field. Per Google’s help page, you can set a WhatsApp click-to-chat link or a text-capable number there. Check it monthly, because the June report shows Google can fill it in without telling you first.
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Chat field | A number or wa.me link you did not enter | Google added numbers automatically in June 2026 |
| Number type | Landline or switchboard instead of a WhatsApp line | A landline cannot receive WhatsApp messages |
| Whose line | A personal or doctor’s phone instead of a shared business line | The number is public on a profile |
| WhatsApp and text both set | Customers see only the text option | Google’s help page states this |
| Shared link | Several profiles pointing to one WhatsApp link | Allowed by Google, but you cannot tell branches apart in chats |
| Chat metrics | Chat performance in profile metrics | Google’s help page points here for chat performance |
For clinics and labs, decide before the button reaches you what staff may discuss over chat, and keep clinical details off it. Our Saudi PDPL marketing guide covers consent for messages, and the profile basics are in our Google Business Profile guide.
If a clinic or branch network is on your list, ask us to review my Google profile contact fields before you plan around chat.
How do you measure WhatsApp clicks that start on Google?
Google gives you chat counts inside profile metrics, and your site analytics gives you the rest. A WhatsApp link on your own website can be tracked as a GA4 event. A chat started from the Google panel never touches your site, so the two numbers will not match and should not be added together.
Keep them in separate rows in your report. Our WhatsApp and call click tracking guide sets up the website side. For reviews, which sit next to the same buttons, see what the Maps sign-in change means for Arab businesses.
If you take bookings through the chat, tag the opening message with the source, for example “Google profile”, so staff can count it by hand until Google gives you a clean export.
Our read
Do not chase the button. Fix the number. A WhatsApp button that sends a patient or a buyer to a dead landline is worse than no button, and the June 2026 episode shows Google will fill that field for you. We would rather see an owner confirm one monitored business line than copy a competitor’s chat setup.
For medical clinics we would also keep the call button prominent and treat WhatsApp as an intake channel with a script. The test we ran is small, so we will repeat it with salons and mid-size clinics when more panels carry the button. If you see it on your own profile first, tell us which country and sector.
The useful question is not whether the WhatsApp button has reached you. It is whether the number Google holds for you reaches a person within the hour. If it does, keep the setup and review it weekly. If it does not, fix the number and the reply rota before any button arrives.
If you run several branches, give each profile its own monitored line, because a single shared link hides which branch a customer meant. Check my profiles for a wrong number if you want a second pair of eyes, or see how local SEO audits work at VOCTOS.
FAQ
Does my Google Business Profile have a WhatsApp button in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Egypt?
Search Engine Roundtable reported the button on 7 October 2026 without naming countries. We searched 17 branded businesses across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan on 12 October, signed out, and saw it on none of the 16 panels that appeared. Check your own panel from a phone and a desktop.
How do I add a WhatsApp number to my Google Business Profile?
Open your verified profile, choose Edit profile, then Contact. Next to Chat, select the pencil, pick WhatsApp, enter a WhatsApp click-to-chat link or a text-capable number, and save. Google says only claimed and verified profiles can add it, and that chat options are available in select regions rather than everywhere.
Google added a wrong WhatsApp number to my profile. What now?
Open Edit profile, then Contact, and look at the Chat field. Search Engine Roundtable reported in June 2026 that Google added numbers automatically, and that owners could later delete the number and save. Replace it with a monitored business line, then check again a week later in case it returns.
Will customers see WhatsApp or text if I set both?
Google’s help page says that if you add both WhatsApp and a text message option, customers see only the text message option. If WhatsApp is your main channel, set only WhatsApp. If you need text as well, accept that the WhatsApp option will not appear.
Can I track WhatsApp chats that start from my Google profile?
Partly. Google shows chat performance in your profile metrics, and your website can track clicks on its own WhatsApp link as a GA4 event. A chat started from the Google panel does not pass through your site, so keep the two counts separate and tag the first message with its source.
