StatCounter’s October 2026 data shows Gemini ahead of ChatGPT in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, 42.2% to 39.9% and 48.0% to 36.8%. In the UAE, ChatGPT still leads, 48.1% to 34.1%. Before you rewrite a strategy around this, read the next paragraph.

All three markets broke in the same month, after four stable months. ChatGPT held between 69% and 82% in each of them from June to September, then lost 32 to 35 points in a single month. Real market shifts of that size do not usually arrive on the same day in three countries. We read the numbers as a measurement signal first and a market signal second, and we say below what would change our mind.

What does StatCounter’s October 2026 data show for Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt?

It shows ChatGPT falling by 32 to 35 points and Gemini rising by 21 to 27 points in every market, with Perplexity growing two to four times. We pulled the monthly series for June to October 2026 on 1 November 2026 from the chart data behind StatCounter’s AI chatbot pages (all platforms, all devices).

Market (share of AI chatbot page views) ChatGPT Sep to Oct Gemini Sep to Oct Perplexity Sep to Oct
Saudi Arabia 74.7% to 39.9% 16.9% to 42.2% 4.3% to 9.7%
United Arab Emirates 80.7% to 48.1% 13.4% to 34.1% 2.3% to 9.2%
Egypt 72.2% to 36.8% 21.4% to 48.0% 3.9% to 11.7%

The Saudi page headline shows slightly different October figures (Gemini 41.64%, ChatGPT 40.62%) from the chart data (42.23% and 39.88%), so treat the second decimal as unsettled while the month is fresh. The direction is the same in both.

Why would three Arab markets break in the same month?

The most likely cause is a change in what StatCounter counts, not a change in what people use. A shift in its sample, in how it detects chatbot referrals, or in how it classifies traffic would hit every market at once. A real adoption change would normally show up first in one market and spread.

Two details in the data point the same way. Perplexity grew by a similar multiple in all three markets, which is hard to explain with product news. And the four months before October were quiet: in Saudi Arabia ChatGPT moved only between 71.6% and 75.7% from June to September. We do not know StatCounter’s internal reason, because we have not seen a change note for this series. That is a gap in our evidence, and we mark it as one.

The honest summary: the numbers are real as reported, but the cause is unconfirmed.

What does StatCounter actually measure?

It measures the share of AI chatbot referrals among page views recorded on sites in its network, not users, not prompts and not time spent. A ChatGPT user who reads one answer and a Gemini user who clicks five links count very differently. If a platform changes how it passes referrers, its share can move without any change in how many people use it.

That last point matters here. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 30 October 2026 that Gemini added utm_source=gemini to cited links in early September and stopped around 28 September, based on analysts’ posts. Google has not confirmed it, and in the Gemini iOS app links open without a referrer, so GA4 files them under Direct. A change like that can move a third-party share without moving real usage, although the dates do not line up exactly with October’s break. Our earlier guide to ChatGPT traffic hiding in Direct in GA4 covers the same trap from the other side.

My read on this

We would not change a client’s ChatGPT work on this month alone. We would add Gemini to every Arabic prompt test we run, because Gemini was already growing all summer (Saudi Arabia 12.3% in June to 16.9% in September). If November and December confirm even half of the October gap, Gemini becomes a co-equal channel in our tests. If the numbers snap back, we will publish that too.

What should an Arab marketing team do this week?

Check your own data before you trust anyone’s chart, ours included. Three checks take under an hour and settle most of the question for your site.

  • GA4 referrals. Compare sessions from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com and perplexity.ai for September against October. If your own Gemini sessions did not move, StatCounter’s jump does not describe your audience.
  • Search Console. Look at the AI-related report for your property and note the date range, so you can compare it with November.
  • A fixed prompt set. Run the same 10 Arabic prompts in ChatGPT and Gemini, signed out, and record whether your brand is cited. Do it again on 1 December.

Our guide to measuring AI traffic in GA4 for Arab markets shows the report setup, and our Gulf AI assistant usage review has the longer series this month sits inside.

Frequently asked questions

“The report says Gemini is ahead, so should I stop optimising for ChatGPT?”

No. Call this failure mode a one-month overreaction. One data point from one third party, with an unexplained break, is not enough to move budget. Keep ChatGPT work running and add Gemini tests alongside it.

“My own GA4 shows almost no Gemini traffic, so is the report wrong?”

Not necessarily. Call this the visibility gap: Gemini answers may mention your brand without sending a click, and cited links may land in Direct or Referral. Compare brand mentions in a fixed prompt set with your referral counts before you decide.

“Which Arab countries are covered?”

We checked Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt for October. We have not yet read Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan or Morocco. We will add them when we have read the same series.

“When will you update this?”

When StatCounter publishes November data in early December, and when Similarweb’s October country rankings appear. Similarweb still showed September on 1 November 2026.

The better question

The useful question is not whether Gemini overtook ChatGPT. It is whether your brand is cited by both, in Arabic, for the queries your customers type. If your brand appears in at least 6 of your 10 test prompts in both assistants, October’s chart is a footnote for you. If it appears in one assistant only, fix that first: that gap costs you more than any market-share swing.

If you want that comparison run on your own Arabic queries, send me the ten queries that matter and we will run them in both assistants.

Data and limits: StatCounter AI chatbot market share, all platforms, monthly, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt, June to October 2026, read on 1 November 2026. Figures are share of chatbot referral page views in StatCounter’s sample, not users. We did not have first-party GA4 data for this piece and did not verify the cause of the October break.
