Egypt has 98.2 million internet users, almost three times Saudi Arabia’s total. DataReportal counted them in October 2025, equal to 82.7% of the population, and the 2026 figures below show where they search and click. In September 2026, Google took 96.41% of search referrals in Egypt and Facebook sent 62.37% of social referrals. Gemini sent 21.39% of AI chatbot referrals, more than in Saudi Arabia or the UAE.

Each figure below names its publisher, scope and month. DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report uses October 2025 data, the communications ministry figures we could verify are for May 2026, and the StatCounter and Similarweb figures cover September 2026. Ad reach counts accounts that advertisers can target, not unique people. Never add platform audiences together.

How many people in Egypt are online in 2026?

Egypt had 98.2 million internet users in October 2025, or 82.7% of its 119 million people, according to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report for Egypt. That leaves 20.6 million people offline, more than the whole population of the UAE. The online population grew by 2.3 million (+2.4%) in the twelve months to October 2025.

The audience is young and mostly rural. The median age was 24.5 at the end of 2025, and 56.5% of Egyptians lived outside urban centres (UN data cited by DataReportal). DataReportal also warns that internet user research takes months to publish, so its published counts can trail real use.

Phones carry most of the traffic, but desktops still matter. StatCounter recorded 63.72% of Egyptian page views on mobile in September 2026, 34.07% on desktop and 2.18% on tablets. Saudi Arabia ran at 68.24% mobile, 30.35% desktop and 1.37% tablet in the same month, and the UAE at 60.03%, 38.91% and 1.05%, so Egypt sits between its two Gulf peers.

Chrome handled 80.31% of page views across all devices that month, ahead of Safari at 8.96%, Edge at 3.41%, Firefox at 2.54% and Samsung Internet at 2.15%, also per StatCounter. If you test landing pages only in Safari, you have tested them on less than a tenth of Egyptian page views.

Mobile subscriptions and internet speeds

Egypt had 126.91 million mobile subscriptions in May 2026, a penetration rate of 113.42%, according to ministry figures reported by Ahram Online. Active mobile broadband lines reached 96.26 million, and 75.85% of mobile subscribers used mobile internet. Speed is the constraint: the median mobile download was 56.45 Mbps in August 2025 (Ookla, via DataReportal).

Two sources count mobile lines in different ways. DataReportal, using GSMA Intelligence data, reported 121 million cellular connections at the end of 2025, equal to 102% of the population, with 95.4% on 3G, 4G or 5G networks. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) counts subscriptions every month. Both totals exceed the population because many people carry more than one SIM.

Fixed internet is the smaller channel. MCIT counted 14.43 million fixed lines (12.9% penetration) and 13.13 million active fixed broadband subscriptions in the same month, the second figure up 9.11% in a year. Ookla’s median fixed download in Egypt was 89.84 Mbps, up 17.5% in the year to August 2025.

Mobile speeds more than doubled, rising by 30.80 Mbps (+120%) over the same twelve months, yet the gap with the Gulf stays wide. Saudi Arabia’s median mobile download was 194.49 Mbps and the UAE’s 614.42 Mbps over the same period. Egypt’s median mobile download speed is less than a tenth of the UAE’s. Page weight you never notice on a Dubai connection costs an Egyptian visitor real seconds, and our Core Web Vitals audit of Arab websites lists the metrics to check first.

Egypt’s median mobile download speed is less than a tenth of the UAE’s.

Which search engines do Egyptians use?

Google handled 96.41% of search engine referrals in Egypt in September 2026, with Bing at 2.52% and Yandex at 0.52%, in StatCounter’s search engine data for Egypt. Search also drives most website visits: search engines sent 86.31% of referral visits that month, social networks 13.38% and AI chatbots 0.31%.

Egypt leans on Google more than its Gulf neighbours do. Google’s share was 94.46% in Saudi Arabia and 93.47% in the UAE in September 2026, with Bing at 3.75% and 3.96%. In Egypt, Bing barely registers. If you buy Microsoft Advertising, treat Egypt as a smaller test than the Gulf, because Google Ads and Google organic carry almost all search demand.

The referral split matters more than the engine split. Visitors in Egypt arrived from search engines about 280 times as often as from AI chatbots in September 2026. Saudi Arabia (82.45% search, 0.41% AI) and the UAE (85.97% search, 0.43% AI) look similar.

Worldwide, the split was 91.00% search, 8.61% social and 0.40% AI, so Egyptian traffic leans more on social than the global average. In all three Arab markets, AI answers work as a citation and trust channel today, while search still delivers the clicks.

AI assistants: ChatGPT leads, Gemini climbs

ChatGPT sent 72.16% of AI chatbot referrals to websites in Egypt in September 2026 and Google Gemini sent 21.39%, according to StatCounter’s AI chatbot data for Egypt. Gemini’s share was higher than in Saudi Arabia (16.54%) or the UAE (13.25%) that month. Perplexity followed with 3.97%, Microsoft Copilot with 1.64% and Claude with 0.82%.

Gemini’s share has grown fast. In the monthly StatCounter data we pulled on 1 October 2026, it was 2.17% in Egypt in August 2025 and 18.07% in August 2026. September’s 21.39% is almost ten times the August 2025 level. Over the same 13 months, Saudi Arabia went from 2.27% to 16.54%, the UAE from 1.73% to 13.25% and the worldwide share from 2.19% to 10.91%.

Similarweb’s September 2026 ranking points the same way, with chatgpt.com fifth among Egypt’s most visited websites, up two places, gemini.google.com 16th and claude.ai up six places to 50th. In Saudi Arabia, chatgpt.com ranked seventh and gemini.google.com tenth; in the UAE, third and twelfth.

These are referral clicks, not a count of how many people use each chatbot. Our guide to measuring AI traffic on Arab websites shows how to split AI referrers out in GA4.

How many Egyptians use AI tools?

The newest official figure measures awareness more than use. In a Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) poll fielded from 15 to 28 July 2026, 65% of respondents knew AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini, up from 22% in 2023. Among those aware, 26.3% used ChatGPT and 10.9% used Gemini.

Meta AI followed at 2.9%. Work was the top reason for use at 51.7%, ahead of personal matters at 38.3% and study at 32.3%, and 55% of users worried about sharing personal data with these platforms. The published reports do not give a sample size.

Egyptian students also got a push toward Gemini. In September 2025, Google and the Ministry of Higher Education offered university students aged 18 and over 12 months of free Gemini Pro. Sign-ups had to happen before 3 November 2025, and the same offer ran in Saudi Arabia. Public data does not show how much of Gemini’s referral share comes from those accounts, so watch the months after November 2026, when the last free years end.

Egypt’s most visited websites in September 2026

Google, YouTube and Facebook were the three most visited websites in Egypt in September 2026, in Similarweb’s ranking updated on 1 October 2026. ChatGPT’s site ranked fifth, ahead of Instagram, X and WhatsApp. Amazon.eg was the leading shopping site in tenth place, and the government portal digital.gov.eg ranked twelfth after climbing four places.

Local sport and news still pull large audiences. The football sites filgoal.com and yallakora.com ranked 20th and 21st, and the news site youm7.com ranked 24th. Noon ranked 41st, the online pharmacy chefaa.com jumped 36 places to 45th, and LinkedIn ranked 28th.

Display advertisers should read the rest of the list too. Similarweb classifies 16 of Egypt’s top 50 sites as adult and one more as gambling. If you buy programmatic display in Egypt, set site exclusion lists before launch.

Facebook ranked third in Egypt, fourth in the UAE and ninth in Saudi Arabia, while x.com ranked third in Saudi Arabia, sixth in the UAE and seventh in Egypt. Similarweb’s free ranking counts website visits only, so app-first platforms such as TikTok (15th in Egypt) look smaller here than they are.

Social media and ad reach by platform

Facebook’s ad tools reported 51.6 million reachable users in Egypt in late 2025, YouTube 49.3 million and TikTok 48.8 million adults, in DataReportal’s Digital 2026 compilation. Egypt had 51.6 million social media user identities in October 2025, or 43.4% of the population, and the 51.3 million aged 18 and over equalled 68.8% of adults.

Most audiences skew male. Men made up 60.1% of Facebook’s adult ad audience, 64.2% of TikTok’s and 75.7% of X’s in late 2025. Snapchat skewed female at 57.0%, and Instagram came closest to even at 46.3% women. If your campaign targets Egyptian women, you will find a larger share of your audience on Snapchat and Instagram than on Facebook or TikTok.

TikTok grew fastest, adding 9.81 million adult users (+25.2%) between late 2024 and late 2025, while X lost 846,000 (-15.4%). Facebook still sends most of the web traffic: it produced 62.37% of social referrals to websites in September 2026, ahead of YouTube at 23.96%, Instagram at 7.43% and X at 4.69% (StatCounter). TikTok is not among the six platforms in StatCounter’s Egypt referral table.

NapoleonCat’s monthly tracker is newer and noisier. It pulls Meta’s marketing tools every month and counted 60.2 million Facebook users in Egypt in September 2026, down 3.2% from August. For the Gulf side, see our Saudi and UAE social media ad reach comparison.

Payments and e-commerce: what the Central Bank publishes

Egypt’s Instant Payment Network, the system behind InstaPay, had about 22 million registered customers by the end of June 2026. By then it had recorded 1.47 billion transactions worth about EGP 4.33 trillion, Central Bank of Egypt Governor Hassan Abdalla said on 29 September 2026, as reported by Ahram Online.

The governor did not say whether those totals cover one quarter, the first half of 2026 or the network’s whole life. Treat them as a scale marker until the Central Bank publishes a dated series.

Mobile wallets point the same way. The Central Bank counted 60 million wallets at the end of 2025, with wallet transactions of about EGP 4 trillion. The series runs 15.2 million (2019), 19.8 million (2020), 25.2 million (2021), 30.4 million (2022), 39.4 million (2023) and 50.4 million (2024), Business Today Egypt reported.

We found no official national e-commerce sales total for 2025 or 2026 from MCIT, the Central Bank or the trade ministry, and the market-size figures that circulate online come from paid research models. Traffic data is easier to pin down: amazon.eg ranked tenth among Egypt’s most visited sites in September 2026 and noon.com 41st (Similarweb).

For merchants, that points to checkout. If your checkout takes only cards, you are ignoring two payment methods with tens of millions of accounts: 60 million wallets and 22 million InstaPay customers on record.

Advertising costs: what is published and what is not

No public source we could verify publishes average Google Ads or Meta cost per click for Egypt in 2026. Our Semrush keyword pull of 1 October 2026 covered Saudi and UAE databases only, so this page carries no Egypt CPC estimates. Public data does give you audience size and audience mix by platform.

For Gulf context only, that pull estimated USD 1.32 per click for the Arabic query “dental clinic” in Saudi Arabia. It put “dentist dubai” in the UAE at USD 12.21. Semrush models these figures from its own data; they are not auction prices from a live account, and they do not transfer to Egypt. Our breakdown of Google Ads CPC in Saudi Arabia and the UAE explains how to read them.

For Egypt, build your own benchmark. Run a Keyword Planner forecast for your Arabic and English terms, split it by city if you sell locally, and compare it with two weeks of live campaign data. If an agency quotes you an “average Egypt CPC”, ask which tool, keyword list and month it came from.

Audience supply is the one cost input with public data. Facebook ads reached 68.8% of Egyptian adults and TikTok ads 65.5% in late 2025, against 28.4% for Instagram and 20.1% for Snapchat (DataReportal).

What do Egypt’s numbers mean for brands in other Arab markets?

Egypt is a bigger, slower and more Facebook-heavy market than Saudi Arabia or the UAE. It has nearly three times Saudi Arabia’s internet users but under a third of its median mobile speed, and Facebook’s ad reach there is 2.9 times Saudi Arabia’s. Plans built for Riyadh or Dubai need new channel weights and page budgets for Cairo.

Search and AI travel better between markets. Google holds more than 93% of search referrals in all three countries, so Google stays the shared base, while prices, delivery terms and payment options need local pages.

On AI, Egypt leads on one measure: Gemini’s referral share is 4.85 points above Saudi Arabia’s and 8.14 points above the UAE’s. Of the 11 Arab markets we checked on StatCounter for September 2026, only Iraq (27.05%) and Algeria (26.31%) gave Gemini a larger share. For the Saudi side of this comparison, see our Saudi Arabia digital marketing statistics for 2026.

If you copy a media plan from Riyadh to Cairo, you shift money toward X and Snapchat, the two platforms where Egypt’s ad reach trails Saudi Arabia’s.

Our read

Egypt rewards brands that plan for very large audiences on slower phones. Search and Facebook carry the traffic, AI assistants send well under 1% of visits, and money is moving to wallets and InstaPay. Our position: build for Google first, and treat any Gulf media plan as a draft that needs rework before it runs in Egypt.

  1. Search gets the first budget line. Search engines sent 86.31% of Egyptian referral visits in September 2026, and Google took 96.41% of search referrals.
  2. Measure AI before it gets big. AI chatbots sent 0.31% of referrals, yet chatgpt.com is the country’s fifth most visited site and 65% of IDSC respondents know AI tools, so a baseline set now shows the trend later.
  3. Pages and checkouts come before new creative. A 56.45 Mbps median mobile download and 60 million mobile wallets are the operating conditions.

Our Egyptian evidence comes from published client work. The Eduverse online school case study, covering 2024 to 2026, reports 78,600 monthly organic visits, 8,700 ranking keywords and 171 pages cited by AI engines.

Visitors in Egypt arrived from search engines about 280 times as often as from AI chatbots in September 2026.

FAQ

How many internet users are in Egypt in 2026?

DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report counts 98.2 million internet users in Egypt in October 2025, equal to 82.7% of the population, which leaves 20.6 million people offline. The communications ministry reported 126.91 million mobile subscriptions in May 2026, but subscriptions count SIM lines rather than people, so that total runs higher.

Which social media platform is biggest in Egypt?

Facebook, on every measure we checked. Meta’s ad tools reported 51.6 million reachable users in late 2025 (DataReportal). Facebook also sent 62.37% of social referrals to websites in September 2026 (StatCounter), and facebook.com was Egypt’s third most visited site that month (Similarweb). YouTube, with 49.3 million, and TikTok, with 48.8 million adults, follow.

Do Egyptians use ChatGPT or Gemini more?

ChatGPT, though Gemini is stronger in Egypt than in the Gulf. In September 2026, ChatGPT sent 72.16% of AI chatbot referrals in Egypt and Gemini 21.39%, against 16.54% in Saudi Arabia (StatCounter). In the IDSC poll of July 2026, 26.3% of people aware of AI tools used ChatGPT and 10.9% used Gemini.

Why do Egypt’s Facebook numbers differ between sources?

They are pulled at different times and processed differently. DataReportal reported 51.6 million Facebook ad reach for late 2025, while NapoleonCat’s monthly pull from Meta’s tools shows 58.4 million for October 2025 and 60.2 million for September 2026. Meta says its audience estimates are not active user counts, so compare each source only with itself.

Is advertising in Egypt cheaper than in Saudi Arabia?

Verified public data cannot answer that yet. No public source we found publishes Egypt CPC benchmarks, and our 1 October 2026 Semrush pull covered only Saudi and UAE keywords. Treat any “average Egypt CPC” without a named tool, keyword list and month as a guess, and run a Keyword Planner forecast for your own terms.

The Egypt numbers that should change your plan

Three numbers should change budgets now: Google’s 96.41% of search referrals, Facebook’s 51.6 million ad reach and the 56.45 Mbps median mobile download. Two belong on a monthly watch list: Gemini’s 21.39% share of AI chatbot referrals and chatgpt.com’s fifth place among Egypt’s most visited websites in September 2026.

Before using any of these figures, check which channels you can measure for your own brand. If your analytics already separate Google organic, paid social and AI referrals for Egyptian visitors, use these figures as quarterly benchmarks. Recheck them when DataReportal publishes its next Egypt report.

If they do not, fix measurement first: tag AI chatbot referrers, filter bot traffic, split Arabic and English queries, and load your top pages on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data. In StatCounter data we read on 5 October 2026, bots made up 3.22% of tracked page views from Egypt in February and 20.08% in September, against 31.13% worldwide. For the AI side, start with our Arabic AI citations research.

Every brand starts from a different subset of these numbers. When you want a second opinion on yours, help me turn the Egypt numbers into a channel plan.
