OpenAI’s Ads Manager counts events from its Pixel or Conversions API, credited last-touch within a 7, 14 or 30 day click window you choose. GA4 sees those visitors only through the UTM tags you add, because OpenAI appends just its own click reference, called oppref. Your CRM holds the revenue. Gulf advertisers need all three, plus PDPL consent.

Key takeaways

OpenAI measures conversions with the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API, or both, deduplicated by a shared event ID.

OpenAI adds oppref to every ad click. UTM parameters are yours to add, and OpenAI says they persist on ad clicks.

Tag ChatGPT ads with utm_medium=cpc and GA4’s default rules file them under Paid Other. Use utm_medium=cpm and they land in Display.

The OpenAI Pixel sets consent to true by default. Under Saudi PDPL practice, set it to false until the visitor agrees.

Expect OpenAI, GA4 and CRM totals to differ. Reconcile on a fixed checklist rather than chasing one number.

What does OpenAI measure for a ChatGPT ad?

OpenAI reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions at campaign, ad group and ad level. A conversion counts when an event from your data source matches a configured conversion event, falls inside the attribution window, and can be tied to an eligible ad click. Totals can include modeled conversions.

Those definitions come from OpenAI’s Conversion Measurement and Measure Results help articles, which we read on 2 October 2026. Four details shape every Gulf report:

You choose a 7, 14 or 30 day click-through window and either no view-through or a 1 day view-through window. Changing the windows alters reporting only, not bidding or billing.

OpenAI uses last-touch attribution and states that it is not multi-touch.

By default a conversion is dated to the ad click or impression, not to the purchase. A separate column reports by conversion time.

Attributed conversions take 24 to 48 hours to appear. Clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, and spend lags 7 to 8 hours.

One conflict needs checking in your own account. The help center says the Conversions total includes view-through conversions when the view-through window is set to 1 day. OpenAI’s developer guide for the Measurement Pixel says view-through conversions are reported separately and excluded from Conversions. Confirm which applies before you set a cost-per-acquisition target.

What does GA4 see when someone clicks a ChatGPT ad?

GA4 sees the landing page URL and whatever referrer the browser passes. OpenAI appends oppref to every ad click, but GA4 does not read it. Unless you add UTM parameters, the session is classified by referrer alone, and OpenAI does not document what referrer an ad click sends.

OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT basics page says advertisers can add static tracking parameters, such as UTM parameters, to landing page URLs, and that those parameters persist on ad clicks. Ads Manager also supports dynamic macros: {campaign_id}, {ad_group_id}, {ad_id} and {ad_account_id}. Parameters set on the ad URL take precedence over those set at ad, ad group or campaign level.

Without UTMs, the outcome is a guess. Our study of how GA4 classifies AI traffic for Arab sites found that ChatGPT’s web answer links carried rel=”noreferrer” in our 2 October 2026 check, which sends organic ChatGPT clicks to Direct. Ads are a separate surface. If an ad click arrives with a chatgpt.com referrer, GA4’s AI Assistant channel can claim it, mixing paid and organic. If it arrives with no referrer, it lands in Direct. Neither outcome is usable for paid reporting.

Tagging every ad is the only way to keep paid ChatGPT traffic apart from organic ChatGPT traffic in GA4.

Which UTM tags put ChatGPT ads in the right GA4 channel?

The utm_medium value decides the channel. GA4’s default rules put any medium matching cpc, ppc, retargeting or paid into Paid Other when the source is not a listed search, social, shopping or video site. A medium of exactly cpm, display or banner goes to Display. ChatGPT is on none of Google’s source lists.

The rules come from Google’s default channel group definitions, read on 2 October 2026. Google’s downloadable source category list contained no AI assistant hostname when we checked it for our GA4 study. The table shows what each common choice produces under those rules.

utm_source

utm_medium

GA4 default channel

Verdict

chatgpt

cpc

Paid Other

Recommended; matches the paid regex, keeps ads out of AI Assistant

chatgpt

paid-ai

Paid Other

Works; easier to filter in explorations

chatgpt

cpm

Display

Avoid; mixes ChatGPT with banner traffic

chatgpt.com

ai-assistant

AI Assistant

Avoid; merges paid clicks with organic AI referrals

chatgpt

(not set)

Unassigned

Avoid; no default rule matches a source without a medium

none

none

Direct, AI Assistant or Referral

Avoid; outcome depends on the referrer

For a single view, build a custom channel group with a “Paid ChatGPT” channel: source contains chatgpt and medium matches the paid regex. Google says custom channel groups apply to reports retroactively. Follow Google’s URL builder guidance on parameter names, and keep values lowercase, because GA4 treats “ChatGPT” and “chatgpt” as different sources.

For a second pair of eyes before launch: Audit my ChatGPT Ads tracking before I spend.

Setup checklist for a Saudi or UAE advertiser

Set up measurement before the first impression, because OpenAI does not backfill conversions from a mismatched setup. The order below follows OpenAI’s documentation and Google’s channel rules, with the Saudi PDPL consent step placed before the Pixel fires. Each step names the source so your developer can check it on the day you build.

Confirm eligibility. The legal entity that advertises and pays must be in a listed country. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were both marked Available on OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability page on 2 October 2026.

Create one data source per website. Ads Manager issues a Pixel ID. A server-only setup still needs that Pixel ID.

Install your consent banner first. Then load the Pixel with consent set to false (step 5 below).

Install the Pixel in the head of every page you measure. Google Tag Manager is supported if it does not reorder the initialisation and event calls.

Send consent. Call the Pixel’s consent command with false before init, and true only after the visitor accepts advertising measurement.

Choose standard events. Use order_created for purchases, lead_created for forms and appointment_scheduled for bookings. Custom event names must match Ads Manager exactly, or they report zero.

Send amounts in minor units. OpenAI wants integers in the currency’s minor unit, so SAR 129.99 is 12999 halalas with currency SAR, and AED 250 is 25000 fils with currency AED.

Add the Conversions API for confirmed orders. Capture oppref from the landing URL, store it with the lead or order, and send it with the server event. Reuse the Pixel’s event_id as the server event’s id so OpenAI deduplicates them.

Tag every ad with utm_source=chatgpt, utm_medium=cpc, utm_campaign with market and language, plus {ad_group_id} and {ad_id} macros.

Mark matching GA4 key events. Use the same names and the same trigger, so purchase in GA4 fires on the same page as order_created.

Set time zones on purpose. Riyadh is UTC+3 and Dubai UTC+4. Align the Ads Manager reporting time zone, the GA4 property and the CRM before comparing days.

How does PDPL consent apply to the OpenAI Pixel?

Saudi law has no dedicated cookie rule, but SDAIA’s privacy policy guideline treats cookie and analytics data as personal data that needs a stated purpose and legal basis. The OpenAI Pixel sends data to OpenAI outside the Kingdom, so consent is the safer basis. OpenAI’s own Pixel defaults to consent unless you switch it off.

SDAIA’s guideline on developing a privacy policy lists cookie data as a data category and cookies and website analytics as collection methods. It asks controllers to state the legal basis, with consent among the options. Our PDPL guide for marketers explains why consent beats legitimate interest for advertising pixels: data leaves the Kingdom, and legitimate interest is unavailable for sensitive data.

OpenAI’s documentation gives three relevant facts. The Pixel initialises consent to true unless you set it to false, and blocked events are not replayed after consent. Automatic advanced matching detects customer details in forms, then hashes them with SHA-256 in the browser before sending. And OpenAI tells advertisers to send conversion data only after giving users clear information and obtaining consent where the law requires it.

Hashing does not take an email address outside the PDPL. A hashed identifier still exists to match a person. Name OpenAI as a recipient in your privacy policy, gate the Pixel on consent, and keep it off pages that reveal health conditions. UAE advertisers answer to Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on personal data protection, and the same banner logic applies.

Tagging Arabic and English landing pages separately

Run Arabic and English as separate ad groups pointing to separate landing pages, and put the language in the campaign tag. GA4 and OpenAI then split the same way, so you can compare conversion rates by language. A single bilingual page with a language toggle blurs that comparison.

The naming pattern below uses only parameters that OpenAI and Google document.

Element

Arabic version

English version

Ad group

KSA, Arabic context hints

KSA, English context hints

Landing page path

/ar/offer/

/en/offer/

utm_campaign

chatgpt_ksa_ar_offer

chatgpt_ksa_en_offer

utm_content

{ad_group_id}_{ad_id}

{ad_group_id}_{ad_id}

OpenAI event

lead_created, same event name

lead_created, same event name

GA4 check

Landing page plus campaign

Landing page plus campaign

Keep the event names identical across languages and split by campaign or landing page instead. Two event names for one action doubles the configuration work in Ads Manager and invites the “custom event reports zero” error OpenAI describes. Our own work here is reading the documentation, not running ChatGPT campaigns, so this is a setup position rather than a performance claim. On that documentation, three choices matter more than any bid.

First, tag every ad with utm_medium=cpc, so GA4 keeps paid ChatGPT traffic out of the AI Assistant channel where organic citations live. Second, ship the Pixel with consent off by default, because OpenAI’s default runs the other way and Saudi enforcement is active. Third, write oppref into the CRM, because that field stays on the record whichever attribution model you later trust.

If OpenAI reports more conversions than your CRM, look at view-through and modeled conversions before you look at fraud. If GA4 shows fewer, check consent and redirects first. Judge the channel on CRM revenue per riyal spent. Our guide to what Gulf advertisers can run on ChatGPT Ads covers eligibility and budgets.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT add UTM parameters to ad clicks automatically?

No. OpenAI appends its own click reference, oppref, to the landing page URL, but UTM parameters are yours to add. OpenAI says static tracking parameters such as UTMs persist on ad clicks, and Ads Manager supports macros including {campaign_id}, {ad_group_id} and {ad_id}. Without UTMs, GA4 classifies ad sessions by referrer alone.

Why does Ads Manager show more conversions than GA4?

Usually because the two count differently. OpenAI credits conversions to the ad click date, can include view-through and modeled conversions, and uses its own window. GA4 dates events when they happen, loses sessions without consent or after redirects that strip parameters, and spreads credit across channels. Compare the same time zone first.

Do we need consent for the OpenAI Pixel in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi law has no cookie-specific article, but SDAIA’s guideline treats cookie and analytics data as personal data that needs a legal basis. Pixel data goes to OpenAI abroad, so consent is the safer basis. Load the Pixel with consent set to false and switch it on only after acceptance. This is not legal advice.

Which GA4 channel will our ChatGPT ads show in?

With utm_source=chatgpt and utm_medium=cpc, GA4’s default rules place sessions in Paid Other, because ChatGPT is not on Google’s search, social, shopping or video lists. A medium of cpm sends them to Display. Build a custom channel group called “Paid ChatGPT” if you want a dedicated row in reports.

Can we track Arabic and English campaigns separately?

Yes. Run separate ad groups for each language with separate landing pages, such as /ar/ and /en/ paths, and put the language code in utm_campaign. Keep the OpenAI event name identical across both, so one conversion setting covers them. Then split results by campaign in Ads Manager and by landing page in GA4.

Which conversion number should you trust?

Tracking ChatGPT ads conversions comes down to deciding which system you will believe when the three systems disagree, and they will. OpenAI and GA4 each tell a defensible story under their own rules, and only your CRM knows which leads paid.

If you have a CRM that stores source fields, add oppref and the UTM values to it before launch and reconcile weekly against the table above. If you do not, fix that first, and run any ChatGPT Ads test with UTMs and a consent-gated Pixel only, treating OpenAI’s numbers as directional until the CRM can confirm them.

Set up our ChatGPT Ads measurement with VOCTOS

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    {
      "@type": "Article",
      "@id": "https://voctos.net/chatgpt-ads-conversion-tracking/#article",
      "headline": "Tracking ChatGPT Ads Conversions in the Gulf: What OpenAI Measures, What GA4 Sees, and How to Set It Up (2026)",
      "datePublished": "2026-10-03",
      "dateModified": "2026-10-03",
      "author": {"@type": "Person", "name": "Beshoy Adel", "url": "https://voctos.net/team/beshoy-adel/", "jobTitle": "Head of SEO and GEO"},
      "publisher": {"@type": "Organization", "name": "VOCTOS", "url": "https://www.voctos.com"},
      "mainEntityOfPage": "https://voctos.net/chatgpt-ads-conversion-tracking/",
      "inLanguage": "en",
      "about": ["ChatGPT Ads", "Conversion tracking", "Google Analytics 4", "UTM parameters", "Saudi PDPL"]
    },
    {
      "@type": "FAQPage",
      "@id": "https://voctos.net/chatgpt-ads-conversion-tracking/#faq",
      "mainEntity": [
        {
          "@type": "Question",
          "name": "Does ChatGPT add UTM parameters to ad clicks automatically?",
          "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "No. OpenAI appends its own click reference, oppref, to the landing page URL, but UTM parameters are yours to add.
